Sgraffito Workshop - January 25th, 2026

Explore the expressive and tactile art of sgraffito in this immersive 4-hour ceramic workshop. Sgraffito is a decorative technique where layers of underglaze or coloured slip are carved away to reveal the clay beneath, allowing for beautifully detailed patterns, illustrations, and textures.

In this workshop, you’ll handbuild your own ceramic piece from scratch, then learn how to decorate it using the sgraffito technique once it reaches the ideal stage for carving. You’ll be guided through form-making, surface preparation, design planning, and carving techniques, with plenty of time to experiment and develop your own visual style.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike — no prior handbuilding or sgraffito experience is required. The focus is on slow making, mark-making, and creative exploration in a relaxed studio environment.

What’s included:

  • All clay, materials and tools

  • Step-by-step instruction and demonstrations

  • Firing of one piece (additional pieces: $10 each)

This workshop runs on Sunday the 25th of January 2026 from 10am-2pm.**

What to bring:
Just yourself — sketches or reference images are welcome but not required. Please bring your own lunch or snacks.

Instructor:

Coby McDougall (she/her), also known as @cobesmgee, is a ceramic artist whose sense of home is split between two west coasts. She currently lives and works in Perth, Western Australia.

Coby’s practice centres on illustrated ceramic forms that are playful, thoughtful, and deeply personal. Her work often features intuitive linework, soft gestures, and illustrative surface decoration.

**No rescheduling or make up session allowed. Classes may be cancelled if minimum enrolment isn’t met. In this case, you’ll receive a full refund.
