Clay Inlay Workshop - Sunday Feb 22nd, 2026

$140.00

Explore the tactile and graphic possibilities of clay inlay in this hands-on 3-hour ceramic workshop. Clay inlay is a decorative technique where contrasting clays — either stained or different clay bodies — are pressed together to create bold patterns, imagery, and surface detail directly within the clay itself.

In this workshop, you’ll handbuild your own ceramic piece from scratch while learning foundational clay inlay techniques. You’ll be guided through slab rolling, slab building, and working with simple moulds, then shown how to combine clays to achieve clean lines, layered patterns, and expressive surfaces. Participants can create pieces such as a plate, tray, small dish or small planter.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike — no prior handbuilding or inlay experience is required. The focus is on slow making, material exploration, and developing confidence with clay through hands-on experimentation in a relaxed studio environment.

What’s included:

  • All clay, materials, and tools

  • Step-by-step instruction and demonstrations

  • Firing of one piece (additional pieces: $10 each)

When:
Sunday 22 February 2026
10am–1pm

What to bring:
Just yourself — sketches or reference images are welcome but not required. Please bring your own snacks if needed.

Instructor:
Tessa Smith (she/her), also known as @anyclay, is an experienced ceramic handbuilder who has been working with clay since 2016. Her practice focuses on thoughtful form, surface play, and functional objects made through intuitive handbuilding processes.

Please note:
No rescheduling or make-up sessions are available. Classes may be cancelled if minimum enrolment isn’t met, in which case a full refund will be issued.
